ISEE Lower Level Mathematics Achievement: the topics list

Mathematics Achievement is the ISEE Lower Level section that looks most like school: 30 questions in 30 minutes on grade-level skills and computation. Where Quantitative Reasoning asks “can you reason with numbers?”, Math Achievement asks “did you learn the math?” — which makes it the section where a topic-by-topic gap check pays off most, because every hole maps to something concrete you can practice.

The topics list

Here’s the territory, organized the way math curricula organize it. Your child doesn’t need mastery of everything — they need to know which of these strands are solid and which aren’t.

  • Whole numbers & operations — place value, and adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing multi-digit numbers. No calculators are allowed on the ISEE, so pencil fluency here is non-negotiable.
  • Fractions & decimals — equivalence, comparing and ordering, and operations. For most 4th–5th graders this is the highest-leverage strand on the whole test; we cover it in depth in the fractions practice guide.
  • Geometry — identifying shapes and their properties, perimeter and area, and solid figures.
  • Measurement — units and conversions, time, and money.
  • Data & probability — reading graphs and tables, with mean-style questions kept simple at this level.
  • Early algebraic thinking — patterns, and simple expressions and equations (finding the unknown, not formal algebra).

Answer: (D)Break it apart: 300 × 6 = 1,800, then 40 × 6 = 240, then 7 × 6 = 42, and 1,800 + 240 + 42 = 2,082. Every wrong choice is a real mistake: (A) 353 adds instead of multiplying (347 + 6), (B) 1,882 drops the carry into the hundreds place (writing 3 × 6 = 18 without the carried 2), and (C) 2,042 drops the carry from the ones place (writing 4 × 6 = 24 without the carried 4). Carrying errors are exactly what this section is checking for.

Answer: (C)The perimeter is the total distance around the rectangle — two lengths plus two widths: 9 + 9 + 5 + 5 = 28 inches. (A) 14 adds one length and one width but forgets to double, (B) 23 counts only three sides (9 + 9 + 5), and (D) 45 is the area (9 × 5). The perimeter/area mix-up is one of the most common geometry errors at this level — worth checking directly with your child.

How to find and fill the gaps

Because Math Achievement is a skills checklist, the wrong way to prep is front-to-back through a workbook — most of that time lands on topics your child already owns. The efficient sequence:

  • Diagnose first. Run a diagnostic that touches every strand and come away with a short, honest list — usually a handful of topics, not twenty.
  • Drill the weak topics, briefly and often. Fifteen minutes a day on the actual gaps beats a weekend marathon of mixed review, especially for computation fluency, which builds through repetition.
  • Re-check as you go. A topic isn’t closed because it was practiced once — it’s closed when your child gets fresh questions on it right, at pace (this section allows a minute per question).

Frequently asked questions

How is Mathematics Achievement different from Quantitative Reasoning?
Math Achievement tests learned, grade-level skills and computation — fractions, geometry, measurement, data. Quantitative Reasoning tests mathematical reasoning — patterns, estimation, comparisons — with minimal computation. In one line: MA asks "did you learn the math?", QR asks "can you reason with numbers?"
Is the math above my child’s grade level?
The topics are grade-level, but the test is designed to spread out strong applicants, so some questions will feel hard — that’s expected. Percentiles do the calibrating: your child is compared only to other same-grade applicants, not to older students.
Are calculators allowed?
No. Calculators are not allowed on any part of the ISEE, so multi-digit pencil computation — with correct carrying and borrowing — needs to be genuinely fluent.
Which topics should we practice first?
The ones a diagnostic shows are actually weak — it differs child to child. That said, fractions and decimals are the most common soft spot for 4th–5th graders and also feed the comparison questions in Quantitative Reasoning, so they’re usually the best first bet.
