The ISEE Upper Level, explained for parents
If your child is applying to a private or independent high school, the admissions office almost certainly asks for the ISEE Upper Level — the Independent School Entrance Exam for applicants to grades 9 through 12. This guide covers what’s on the test, the one question format your child has probably never seen, how the scoring actually works, and how much preparation is realistic alongside a high-school-bound course load.
Who takes the ISEE Upper Level?
The Upper Level is for students applying to grades 9–12, so test takers are usually in 8th through 11th grade when they sit it. The single most common mix-up is assuming the level follows your child’s current grade — it follows the grade they are applying to. A student in 8th grade applying for 9th-grade entry takes the Upper Level; a student in 7th grade applying for 8th-grade entry takes the Middle Level. One reassurance worth internalizing early: your child is compared only to other applicants entering the same grade. A student applying to 9th grade is not measured against 11th-grade applicants taking the same form.
What's on the test
Four scored multiple-choice sections plus an unscored essay, always in this order:

That is 160 scored questions in about 2 hours 10 minutes, plus the essay and two short breaks. The pacing is the part families underestimate: Verbal Reasoning allows just 30 seconds per question, and Mathematics Achievement is 47 questions in 40 minutes. A student who knows the material cold can still finish poorly by spending three minutes on a hard geometry item.
The format nobody has seen before: quantitative comparison
Roughly the back half of the Quantitative Reasoning section is quantitative comparison, and it is unlike anything in a normal math class. Instead of solving for an answer, your child sees a quantity in Column A and a quantity in Column B and picks one of four fixed choices: A is greater, B is greater, the two are equal, or the relationship cannot be determined from the information given.
These questions reward reasoning instead of computing — often the fastest path is to compare structure rather than calculate either column. Students meeting the format for the first time on test day routinely lose points they had the math to earn. How it's scored
Each section produces three numbers, and they matter in increasing order of importance:

There is no penalty for wrong answers. Every blank is a guaranteed zero and every guess is a free chance, so your child should never leave a question unanswered — a lesson best learned in practice rather than discovered afterward.
Expect percentiles to read lower than school grades do. The comparison group is not all students; it is the self-selected pool of families applying to independent schools. When to take it, and how often
Applications are typically due in December through January for the following September, so most families test in the fall of the application year — often October or November, which leaves room for a second attempt before deadlines.
The ISEE may be taken up to three times per admission year, once in each testing season (fall, winter, spring/summer). That makes an early fall sitting genuinely low-risk: it produces a real score, and a real score tells you what to work on far better than any practice test.
How to prepare without wrecking the fall
An Upper Level candidate is juggling high-school coursework, activities, and often applications themselves. Preparation that assumes two free hours a day will simply be abandoned. What works:
- Start with a diagnostic, not a curriculum. The content spans everything through Algebra I and geometry. Guessing which parts are weak wastes the scarcest resource your family has.
- Practice in short, frequent sessions. Twenty minutes most days beats a three-hour Saturday cram, both for retention and for the odds your teenager keeps doing it.
- Drill quantitative comparison specifically. It is the least familiar format and the fastest to improve.
- Take at least one full-length timed test. Pacing is a separate skill from knowing the math, and it is only learnable under a clock.
- Don’t cram vocabulary lists. Upper Level verbal rewards words seen in context. Reading widely, plus targeted synonym practice, outperforms flashcard marathons.
